Notes

Shiromiya, an unemployed man around 40, happily lives with his five-year-old child Yoyoko at a quiet Osaka hat shop. In fact, the two of them are burdened with a secret that no one else can know about. Machi, an acquaintance of Shiromiya who works as a police officer, knows that Shiryomiya has returned home after decades away. Machi begins to suspect there’s something fishy with his daughter Yoyoko. Contrary to their comfortable day-to-day life, their father-daughter relationship is fragile. Despite being far from normal, they begin to grow together as one. You’ll be shocked by the climactic revelation of the truth behind their make-believe life.
Adapted from Hiroyuki Shoji’s novel of the same name, Gokko is a life-action film by groundbreaking director Naoto Kumazawa, with a screenplay by Izumi Takahashi. Junia Chihara plays a caring but conflicted father, and Nanaka Hirao gives a dedicated performance as his daughter. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen.
